MT BULLER PRIMARY SCHOOL - No 4959

First school was run as a private school housed in Grey Rocks the home of Judy and Ernest Forras. It was not registered with the Education department, though its school age pupils were registered for correspondence courses.

Opened in July 1966 after a “private” school conducted by a teacher employed by the parents was found to be inadequate for the needs of the children.

Mt Buller School

The school, held in a small room in BULL RUN CANTEEN, was attended by seven children from beginners to Grade 5.

The first teacher was Miss J. Nelson. The following year the school was held in the “ABOMINABLE RESTURANT” for first and third terms, the off peaks of the ski season.

The Education Department was approached for a school building to be placed on the school site, but this was refused because of low attendance. During the second term, 1967, school was held in the staff lounge of the “Ski-Hire Shop.” During this term nine children attended. Further requests for a Department school were refused because of small numbers.

In 1969 the Department for the first term rented “The Garb Shop”. Finally in July 1969 the Department erected a new 20ft x 20ft insulated school building.

The museum is looking for the names of any past teaching staff.
