Ski Veteran Donates Piece of Alpine History:

Don Bennett

Don Bennett first strapped on a pair of skis 80 years ago. The thrill of those skis running over fresh snow and a love of the Alps has been integral to his life ever since.

Co-founder of the Alpine Club of Victoria , Don was instrumental in the establishment of a radio network in the Mt Hotham and Mt Bogong area to improve skier safety, a service that lasted 18 years and saved many lives.

Don presented the old radios to Museum manager Marg Franke-Williams at his home in Brighton. A 40 minute interview with Don Bennett can be seen at the museum.

You may have seen this before?

This wonderful map was uncovered recently, under a more recent map of Mt Buller Trails. The little A frame at the BP Mansfield Chalet Roadhouse has obviously been there for many years. Painted circa 1981 after the Federation Chair lift but before the Playground Poma and the Horse Hill Chair, the artist is unknown. After much cajoling, and thanks, the map has been moved to its final resting place at the National Alpine Museum at Mt Buller.

Many thanks to Mark and Darrell Warren of the BP Chalet Roadhouse, Mansfield.
